In May 2017, FoWS were delighted to announce the installation of Walkden station's first art scheme, a series of 10 laser-cut steel panels designed by Wigan-based artist Mark Mennell in collaboration with students at the local Salford City College. The scheme was jointly funded by Walkden and Little Hulton Community Committee , Salford City Council's Recycle and Reward scheme , and Nothern
The artwork has brought new life and interest to the previously bare walls lining the stairs to the platform, and features scenes from Walkden's railway and industrial heritage, local wildlife, destinations serviced by the station's trains.
The project has been short-listed in the Station Art Scheme - Permanent Projects category in the 2017 ACoRP Awards.

The previous operators - Northern Rail - did a great job improving trains and facilities despite only being contracted to provide a "stand-still" (no growth) service. With Arriva we are entering an expansive new area of new trains, upgraded services and stations, and yes we even have a date (2019) for scrapping of the uncomfortable "Pacer" trains.
